Case Studies

Putting together a family tree requires a lot of patience and lateral thinking. Spellings depended on the transcriber or registrar's entries as illiteracy was prevalent and there are many variations of a surname within most families.

Our ancestors didn't always leave obvious trails and it may take a variety of approaches to try and locate them. In the example shown it was necessary to find an occupational link to find where the subject had previously lived and to whom he'd been married. This in turn led to earlier census returns, his parents and siblings.
